Professor Otto Lidenbrock, studying in his office, comes across a book filled with Icelandic poetry and riddles, the writing of Arne Sakussemm. Some might say the professor's nephew walks into the study at the wrong moment but others believe that this was the most important decision of his life. Axle Lidenbrock ,the professor's nephew, gets caught up in his uncles thoughts and processes. His uncle shows him the book. This action leads an overly excited professor who starts packing bags for a journey unlike any other. During the Lidenbrock adventure they meet a large guide who is muscular and quiet, named Hans. Hans was the guide who helped tremendously in the exploration although he never talks much, he's a silent companion who is a life saver. The three men travel up to an extinct volcano to look for an answer to Sakussemm's riddle. The three men find a fork in the road and must choose wisely for there is no direction told for them to follow. This decision could mean life or death for the companions. During their time under the earths crust, Axle discovers a fatal issue that they need to address as soon as possible, water. The three men were running out of water and this is obviously a large issue for the men who will be traveling around and walking. Will the companions solve the largest issue of all or will they become part of the earths formation and its never ending depths?
Faith and Doubt
Axle is a large player in this role between the connection of faith and doubt. Axle doubts his uncles faith in Arne Sakussemm . Axle points out that the party needs water in order to continue on down their path. Otto Lidenbrock replies to Axle saying that the water will last three days if they ration out the water to each person(Pg.106). Axle doesn't like this reply and it worries him until he falls of dehydration and exhaustion. Axle also learns that his doubts in his uncle are a wrong way to go about life and he starts looking for a solution to the problem. Hans finds an underground stream but its to far away to get any water for it is on the other side of a wall. Hans decides to pick up the pickaxe that they were carrying with them and starts to mine out the wall. Whoosh, the wall breaks and water sprays out the hole(Pg.122). Axle gets water and he apologizes to his uncle for doubting him and this changes his mentality through the tunnels. Axle and his old ways always appear in the story as doubtful, "a raft would be just as hard to make as a boat, and i don't see-"(Pg.162). Axle is doubting that his uncles idea for making a raft is worth while to traversing the vast ocean that is set before them. The professor believes that this is a good plan and already has Hans working on it. Axle is again proven that he doubts his uncle and his faith is undeniably not in the right direction to help him move forward in any way to a greater goal.
